04.05.2014 - 2ème place au SPIT pour les étudiants EHL

On April 4th, the Champagne was the scenery of the international wine tasting competition SPIT organised by Sciences Po Paris. 15 teams from major universities worldwide competed in the cave of the French Champagne house, Bollinger.

Each team consisting of 3 students was required to identify the vintage, grapes and appellation of 3 champagne, 3 white and 4 red wines of international origin.
The Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne was represented by an exclusively feminine team made of Johanna Dayer, Laura Paccot and Alix Waldis. The first round was a highly challenging theoretical questionnaire related to the wines. At the midway of the run, the girls were ranking in the top 5, being the first French-speaking team. After a well-runned second round, they made it to the finals.

The organizing team had selected a champagne and a red wine that each finalist team had to identify and describe with 5-minute of preparation. Each team had to send a delegate to present their findings in front of the jury led by the 2013's best sommelier of the world, Paolo Basso. Johanna Dayer realised an outstanding performance using a perfectly systematic approach and ended under warm applaud. The SPIT team selected the incredible 1995 Champagne Bollinger Vieilles Vignes and the 2004 Bordeaux Château Latour AOC Pauillac to test the finalists.

The results were announced at the end of a 4-course lunch held in one of the Bollinger's caves with Champagne pairing. The EHL team ranked second just after Oxford and followed by St. Andrews. After the competition, the organizers had scheduled a tour of the Domaine before the teams head back to Paris where a cocktail dînatoire took place at the Cave Legrand.

This intense experience was well-appreicated two weeks after having been on the other side of the scene during EHL's wine-tasting challenge, Millesime. The three students enjoyed the smooth organisation and the outstanding programme. On top of that, the amazing atmosphere amongst all participants largely contributed to the great overall impression.
